Commissioned in 1978 under the late PM (and later President) Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham and designed by Guyanese engineer Joseph Holder, the original Demerara Harbor Bridge was a 61-span floating wonder—but it was only built to last ten years. As Guyana’s economy boomed, that old bridge became a massive bottleneck.
To fix this, President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s administration commissioned the new Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge in 2025. Built through a collaboration with China, this massive, four-lane, cable-stayed structure features a 50-meter vertical clearance. Now, large ships can pass 24/7 without retractions, permanently ending the traffic nightmares of the old floating bridge and unlocking massive growth for the West Bank's oil, gas, housing, and tourism sectors.
I first saw the project three years ago while visiting Guyana for my grandmother’s funeral, back when it was just in its infancy. Over the next two years, the entire country waited impatiently for its completion. Many call it the best project the government has ever done. Approaching it recently, my cousin called it the "pride and joy of Guyana"—and seeing it up close, I have to agree. Every nation deserves an iconic landmark to be proud of, and as Guyana grows, I’m sure this is just the first of many majestic structures to come.
Crossing the bridge, we witnessed the Mighty Demerara River like never before. The view was incredible—comparable to standing in a Midtown Manhattan elevator and getting a complete view of the city. As we made our way down, I noticed a whole new ecosystem coming to life, with pedestrians jogging, people walking, and cyclists riding.

We specifically went to visit the Guyana–China Friendship Park, which features recreational zones, scenic landscapes, sports facilities, and great gathering spaces. Having stopped by Papa John's Pizza on Sheriff Street earlier, we had two large pizzas ready to go, allowing us to really sit down and take in the tranquility of the park.
Our three-year-old had a blast at the kids' playground. Growing up, we lacked recreational facilities like this for basketball, tennis, or soccer, so I was really happy to see them incorporated here. Honestly, there should be green spaces like this in almost every community.
As a basketball hobbyist, I made my way over to the court to engage with a few of the young men playing. They were genuinely excited to have the facility. It inspired me to make a commitment to donating some equipment, and I encourage others to do the same. Let's ensure they always have good balls, let's keep up the maintenance, and let's foster this community that provides a safe space for the public. No, I’m not a politician—just someone who loves to see good things done for the benefit of society.
We also had a chance to visit family on the West Bank, and the area is absolutely bursting with development potential. It is an absolute must-visit the next time you're in Guyana.
