My wife and I met in December 2019, just before the pandemic. Born in Miami to Cuban and Puerto Rican parents, she has the biggest, most loving heart. In fact, she’s put more effort into learning my culture than I have learning Spanish! By following Guyana’s top YouTubers, she’s mastered our favorite meals and cultural traditions.

The ultimate highlight of our trip happened when my cousin secretly arranged for us to meet one of my wife's YouTube heroes: ARD, a true gentleman who showcases everyday Guyanese life. While we were having breakfast at a cafe, I got the 20-minute, then 5-minute warning. When I saw him walk through the door, I slipped away to ensure the surprise went off without a hitch.

My wife’s face completely lit up! Honestly, I was just as starstruck—we spend our evenings watching him on TV, and suddenly he was right there. We chatted and took photos before he had to run. But the surprises weren't over. On my way back from grabbing something in our room, I stepped off the elevator into a loud gathering. ARD had returned with Living Ma Best Life, another amazing culinary YouTube star we love! It was an incredible double-surprise. Please check them both out on YouTube, like, and subscribe—they are fantastic people.

We visited the Botanical Gardens, home to the Seven Ponds where Guyana's former presidents and heroes rest. It's a must-see to truly appreciate our nation's history and struggle for independence. Right next door is the Guyana Zoo. While the animal lineup is smaller than when I was a kid, it’s about to undergo a massive, modern expansion including a large aquarium. The best part? Our three-year-old daughter had an absolute blast running around and seeing the animals.

Before the zoo, we stopped at Papa John’s on Sheriff Street in Georgetown. Fun story: a few years ago, I discovered my neighbor was the one bringing the franchise to Guyana with plans for seven stores! When I told him I was visiting, he connected me with his manager, who rolled out the red carpet for us. We got a behind-the-scenes look at how they source ingredients and adapt to local tastes. I’ve never had the art of pizza-making explained in such detail—it was a real treat. Go support them and the local economy!

We wrapped up the day hitting a local mall and grabbing some legendary Guyanese street food—nothing beats a good Egg Ball!

Stay tuned for Part 4, where I’ll share our experience crossing the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge and visiting the Guyana-China Friendship Park, formerly known as Joe Vieira Park!
